1. What is the average property tax bill in Davidson County and how does that compare to the rest of the state?
A: We talked about property taxes at the beginning of the year but new numbers are in and they show that the median property tax paid in Davidson County is now the second highest in the state, passing Shelby County.
Williamson County remains the highest at almost $2,900.
Shelby County previously had higher median taxes, but last year Davidson inched past it — both close to $2,400.
You’ll remember Metro raised property tax rates in 2020 then lowered them back in 2021. This is a reassessment year and besides
having property values reassessed, the mayor said he’s considering raising the tax rate.

2. How does this compare to the rest of the country?
A: The average effective tax rate across the country is .90%
Tennessee’s tax rate is low at .55%, it’s the 10th lowest in the country – NJ is the highest at 2.2.%, Illinois is second at 2.07%.
Alabama — .38% — and Nevada — .49% — are the lowest.
Metro Nashville’s tax rate is lower than most major cities around the country – you’ll see articles about how it’s one of the lowest in the country.
But if property values are high, then even lower rates will have property owners paying high taxes.
So when it comes to dollars paid, property owners in Davidson County, are paying close to $2,400, which is about average for the rest of the country.
You have very low property taxes in several places in Alaska, Louisiana and Alabama, we’re talking a few hundred dollars a year.
On the flip side, you have all of New Jersey and areas in and around NYC paying upwards of $10,000 a year in property taxes. Falls Church City in Virginia too, in Santa Clara County, San Francisco County and Marin County in California the median property tax is between $8,000-$9,000.
