1. How high are the taxes on beer and other alcohol in Nevada?

A:  Nevadans pay just $.16 per gallon of beer and malt beverages, but for what’s considered “distilled spirits” — you pay between 70 cents per gallon and $3.60 per gallon, depending on the type of alcohol, how much liquor it has in it.

Those taxes added up to $51.5 million in the state last year, and $56.5 million in 2022.

2. What about the taxes on other vices like marijuana, cigarettes, other tobacco?

A: You have the cigarette tax, tax on other tobacco products, and taxes on both wholesale and retail cannabis.

All taxes on tobacco products were $179 million.

All taxes on marijuana products were $133 million.

All together, with the alcohol tax, the so-called vices brought in $364 million last year — it was $398 million in 2022.

3. How do these taxes compare to other states?

Despite the hundreds of millions of dollars Nevadans spent on this, the state actually has one of the lowest taxes on alcohol.

The lowest tax, $.16 on beer, has Nevada ranked 36th highest state — or 14th lowest.

Tennessee and Alaska have the highest beer taxes at $1.29 and $1.07 per gallon — Missouri and Wisconsin pay the least, $.2 and $.6 per gallon.

Even that high tax of $3.60 on high alcohol content drinks has Nevada ranked the 39th highest state — or 11th lowest.

Washington state pays the highest at $36.55, Missouri pays the least at $2.

So, vices can be expensive in more ways than one.
