Over 1,800 current and former scientists received up to $400 million from third-party paid royalties (think: pharmaceutical companies) for inventions developed while working for the National Institute of Health (NIH).

The #1 recipient of 3rd-party royalty payments at NIH is Dr. Robert Gallo. Dr. Gallo left NIH in 1995. However, between 2010 and 2016, he ranked #1 of 1,806 scientists in the number of royalty payments collected.
