During the winter 2023 ice storm in Austin, Texas, Austin Energy couldn’t keep the lights on for many customers and the general manager, Jackie Sargent, quietly retired shortly after the storm.

Deputy Public Policy Director for Open the Books Rachel O’Brien says that Sargent continued to earn a salary for almost a year after she left her job by staying on the payroll in a consultant role and was one of the highest-paid public officials in Austin for 2023.
